Can you believe it has already been five years since Prince William and Kate Middleton got married? The royal couple had the wedding of the century on April 29, 2011 at London’s esteemed cathedral Westminster Abbey, which means they’re celebrating five years of wedded bliss this year.
Although Kate and William are England’s royalty, the whole world was thrilled to watch Kate walk down the aisle and marry William. With an estimated 2 billion viewers tuning in for the royal wedding broadcast, it was clearly an exciting event no matter where you were from. But the nuptials were such a big deal in the UK that April 29, 2011, was even declared a bank holiday!
But the excitement that surrounded the lavish wedding didn’t even compare to the magic of the actual event! After plenty of pomp and circumstance, Kate arrived at Westminster Abbey via car (which broke the tradition of taking a carriage) and began to make her way down the aisle in a gorgeous lace-sleeved dress. Oh, and how could we forget about that train?! Kate’s dress draped so far behind her that her sister, Pippa Middleton, had to help her out of the car to make her way to William!
Unlike typical wedding ceremonies, Kate and William’s lasted a whopping hour and 15 minutes. Hey, it’s the royal wedding…it could be five hours long and still be thrilling! There was plenty of fanfare, but for the most part, it was a sweet and meaningful ceremony that went off without a hitch!
As if the world wasn’t thrilled enough for Kate to officially be part of the royal family, things practically became even more exciting after she and William left the cathedral — because they hadn’t kissed yet! Following the ceremony, they stepped out on the steps of Buckingham Palace and shared the most memorable first kiss the world could’ve asked for. What a way to cap off such an incredible occasion, huh?
Since their momentous wedding day, Kate and William have only continued to blow everyone away with their amazing contributions to England and the entire planet. Not only do they have the two most adorable children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, but they have traveled to countless countries to show their love and support for people around the world. Needless to say, William and Kate deserve nothing more than to have a fabulous time celebrating their anniversary together. Happy 5th anniversary, you two!
